A Practitioner’s Perspective

Words are tricky. We use them every day—pouring out texts, posts, random conversations, and emails. We lean on them to connect with people, to share ideas, to be seen and heard.

On the Minister's Mind

If you have listened to many of my lessons, you know that often I will pause and ask you to “take a deep breath.”  Typically, I interject that instruction because I suddenly sense that the room is collectively holding their breath, or perhaps breathing very shallow.  I can feel it in the room, and it tends to happen when the topic is touching in some way, revealing something heartfelt.  I just don’t want you to forget to breathe, to allow it all in

A Practitioner’s Perspective

So much of life depends on how we look at things, or how we think about things. The quality of our looking or our thinking creates our life. Possibility, beauty, contentment, and creativity may be all around us, but we fail to see them because our looking or our thinking has become repetitive and negative.

On the Minister’s Mind

So many of us are experiencing great challenges with the social environment in which we currently live.  Perhaps you have found it necessary to limit the amount of news you consume or purposefully spend time with more positive people to offset the flow of negativity we encounter on the roads of life.  There seems to be an undercurrent of anger and frustration, isn’t there?

I recently posted on Facebook, commenting on someone’s argument that violence is sometimes acceptable.  Let me share about my choice to comment.

Over the years I have frequently found myself in coaching conversations regarding boundaries.  Whether the person is complaining about how a family member is treating them, or a co-worker is upsettingly negative, or how their partner is unhappy with their chosen spiritual path, pretty soon we are talking about the need to set or renegotiate a boundary.

Have you ever played Jenga? It’s a game where rectangular wooden blocks are stacked in a tower and the object of the game is to remove them from the middle one by one without toppling the whole thing.

A while ago, I became interested in Dr. David Hawkins’ research on consciousness, and specifically the impact an individual has when they live in the frequency of unconditional love.  His research shows that a single person who vibrates with the energy of pure love can counterbalance the negativity of 750,000 who do not.

I love when science and medicine confirm my spiritual beliefs!  Our philosophy is called The Science of Mind for a reason. The principles and practices we teach are demonstratable. For example, Medical News Today recently published an article about how being mindful helps with your emotional well-being.  We teach mindfulness as a spiritual practice.

Did you hear last week that the US Mint made the decision to stop making the penny?  I am sure there were many factors involved including the reality that it cost more to produce a penny than its value, and that most of us no longer make cash transactions.  If I were to guess, most pennies in circulation are either lost underneath sofa cushions, saved in coin collections, or sitting in various shaped jars, banks and containers in our homes.  I don’t think I even have any coins in my wallet, do you?

Sometimes my heart breaks when I see the impact that adults’ decisions have on my students. I know that I am not the only teacher who is deeply impacted as we become aware of the home lives of students in our classrooms.

As we approach Mother’s Day this year, I am happy that I get to spend it with my own mom.  Since she lives on the west coast, we don’t often get to share this traditional day set aside to honor our moms.  Typically, I send a card or flowers or something to let her know that I am celebrating with her from afar, but this year will be different.

I bet you could identify several things going on in your life right now that you wish would end or change. Am I right? Everyone’s list would be different but yours could include things like a challenging situation between you and another person, a physical ailment, a difficult work project, boredom with a repetitive task, debt, a global issue or even loneliness.

As I was headed to bed last night, I was thinking about the events of the past week and fear swept across my heart. “What am I afraid of?” – I asked myself. The only answer that came to me was that I feared that my beloved life might change or be threatened by events and decisions happening way beyond my control.

When I read this quote by author Stephen King, I chuckled at the ironic truth of his wisdom! As we gather in spiritual community, we learn a whole lot about how to live a life of love and light, compassion and creativity. We study ancient sacred texts and modern spiritual teachings and everything in between, gathering information and nuggets of insight. However, it is not until we face some real-life challenging situations that we get to put it all into practice and start “making pearls.”

Last week I was in Provincetown for my 60th birthday, and I was mesmerized by the colorfulness of humanity all around me. With June being Pride Month, I don’t know a better place on the planet to experience rainbows than Ptown! Everywhere I looked I saw expressions of individuality and expressions of acceptance and oneness.

Let’s talk about love! We all long for love. We want to experience that incredible feeling of being seen, appreciated, cherished and chosen. We want to know that others care for us, even when we are not in their presence. It is a universal longing.

The people who spend significant time with me may notice that I wear the same pieces of jewelry pretty consistently. When asked about them, I am always willing to share the story behind each one. Most were gifts from people who have played major roles in my life, but some of them I purchased for myself to signify something important to me.
