On the Minister's Mind

by Rev. Laine Morgan

This week we are intentionally focusing on one of the most interesting parts of being human – relationships. From the moment our souls breathe into our magic suits at birth, we start the lifelong journey of interacting with other human beings. And, from those earliest connections all the way to our current relationships, we have each been learning and growing along the way.

People cross our paths for many reasons and for varying lengths of time, but they are all showing up to allow us to practice spiritually. Sometimes it is easy to allow our loving energy to flow in a relationship, and sometimes that flow can be blocked by how we interpret behaviors and situations we share. The more authentically we can be with the people around us, the greater the love flows.

Brene Brown, our wisdom teacher this week, says it this way – “When two people relate to each other authentically and humanly, God is the electricity that surges between them.”

Not too long ago I found a wallet on the road in my neighborhood. The driver’s license showed the wallet belonged to a man who lived down the street from me, but I had never met him. When I walked over to the address, he was working in his garage and was quite surprised by my visit. Obviously, I was there for a positive reason, and I felt his gratitude meeting my compassion as a surge of connection between us – God was present.  What a fun conversation we had!

I so enjoy it when I feel that surge of love energy! It does feel electric in nature, and when it is unexpected I can feel it flow through my entire energy field. I most feel this God energy when I interact with a stranger in a kind or helpful way, like my neighbor. But, too often, we hold ourselves back – but why?

In our lifelong catalog of relationships, some carry on and even end in painful and confusing ways. It might be tempting to protect ourselves by withdrawing into facades and superficial ways of relating to others, or worse – not interacting at all! When we do that, I believe our souls just wait within us for the opportunity to be seen and felt in real connections again.

Our inner light waits to shine, so we must clean up any emotional debris that blocks the flow. The other party is often unwilling to help with that task, so we must own it ourselves as the necessary work of unblocking the flow of God through acknowledgement, forgiveness and personal restoration.

Give yourself permission to accept all the different ways people show up in your life, move on from those that no longer serve you, and keep experiencing the electric God energy flowing between you and as many others as possible – even strangers. It is what makes us feel alive!
