A Practitioner’s Perspective

There’s an old joke about a man who finds a magic lamp with a genie inside. He rubs the lamp, the genie appears and grants him three wishes. Sarcastically, the man says, “Make me a cheeseburger.” And with a puff of smoke, the genie turns him into a cheeseburger.

Be careful what you ask for.

This idea is echoed across cultures and spiritual traditions. The Christian Golden Rule says  “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The subtext is that whatever we send out comes back to us in some form.

In many magical traditions, practitioners may follow the ethic “harm none.” In Wicca and Neo-Paganism, the Law of Threefold Return teaches that the positive or negative energy a person sends into the world returns multiplied by three. It’s summed up in the Wiccan Rede “Ever mind the rule of three, what ye send out comes back to thee.”

This cautionary wisdom is fully aligned with New Thought and the teachings of Ernest Holmes. He believed we live in an intricately woven web of Life, a great unified field in which all beings are connected. We express this as “We are all One.”

In such a universe, to harm another is to harm ourselves, and to bless another is to bless ourselves. This understanding invites us into a deeper sense of compassion, mindfulness, and responsibility for the ripple effects of every thought, word, and action.

One of the challenges of manifestation is that we rarely see the full consequences. Life is a complex system and if you change one thing, it reverberates through everything connected to it.

Sometimes what we ask for comes in a form we didn’t expect or didn’t actually want.

A friend recalled how he desperately needed $20,000. He prayed fervently, visualized the money, and focused intensely on receiving it. Within a short time, the money arrived, but through the sudden death of an uncle he loved. He received an unexpected inheritance, and was grateful for the financial help, but also filled with sadness and even a certain guilt.

One of the spiritual hazards of our desire is we often ask for the what without understanding the how. The “how” matters.

We can also end up receiving something that seems to match our request, but not the spirit of what we really wanted.

I once set the intention to attract new writing assignments. I wanted more interesting ghostwriting clients who paid well. Not long after, I manifested an aspiring motivational speaker who wanted a book to promote his fledgling speaking career.

He turned out to be an intimidating, verbally abusive client. Writing for him became such an emotional and spiritual drain that I had to use an escape clause in the contract to end the project.

Feeling guilty about not completing the job (I hated leaving something undone), I referred him to another highly respected ghostwriter. She didn’t last long either. She ran into the same issues and to this day, I’m not sure if he ever got his book from anyone.

That experience taught me an important lesson about manifestation. Be precise. Don’t just ask for “more clients” or “more money.” Ask for harmony, respect, ease, joy. Ask for whatever qualities matter most to you. The universe responds to your vibration, not word count.

Your emotional energy is also part of the request. When you speak a desire aloud -- or silently within -- notice how it feels. Does it carry fear, desperation, or doubt? Or does it carry confidence, joy, and openness? The emotional tone helps shape the outcome.

Can you feel what it would be like to already have the thing you’re asking for? Can you imagine the peace, satisfaction, or excitement that would accompany it? That feeling-state is part of the creative process.

When we truly anticipate good things, life meets us halfway.

So be careful what you ask for. Not because the universe is out to trick you, but because it takes you at your word, at our vibration, and at our deeper intentions.

Ask consciously. Ask clearly. Ask kindly. And above all, ask from a place of trust that what comes back to you will reflect the energy you send out into this beautifully interconnected world.
