On the Minister's Mind
by Rev. Laine Morgan
Last week I went with some friends to see comedian Kristin Key. Her humor is intelligent, quirky and often she writes song parodies to communicate her message. I wish I could have recorded one part of her show because the point she made was poignant and timely, but I will just have to paraphrase to share it.
Since she was performing in Florida, she commented on the bravery exhibited when people in the community resist the government officials painting over the rainbow crosswalks in our cities, by using sidewalk chalk to color them again. She shared a story about workers obliterating just such a colorful crosswalk in the dark of night only to have one of our Florida rain storms come through, wash away their feeble coverup, and reveal the rainbow once again in the morning light.
Her punchline was something like – “You may cover up a rainbow crosswalk, but you can never take away rainbows. Nature always produces more because God has some serious Gay Pride.” We all got the point - rainbows exist in nature and nothing a human being can do will stop them.
Let us take that message to heart. The dark ideas we see promoted, funded, and even enforced cannot obliterate the light, truth and love that is inherent in the nature of the Divine. The creative force of Universal Power obviously values diversity and inclusion and uniqueness. It values forward progress and light and cooperation. The black and white, fear driven mandates are just that – man made - and nature itself sings its own colorful song of beauty in the face of them.
God is life affirming. Period. Anything that is not affirming life is not of Spirit, and therefore, temporary. Let that truth bolster your heart whenever darkness seems to have more power. Stand in spiritual poise on firm ground, knowing that waves of hate have swept through humanity time and time again, age after age, but the grace of love always triumphs because darkness has no power in the presence of light.
God has some serious pride when it comes to any expression of the qualities of life that are our inherent nature. Whenever it storms, literally or figuratively, look for the rainbow because it is a universal symbol of Divine Love being present, even in our darkest days. Thanks for the reminder, Kristin Key.
